The challenge of improving data skills to increase accessibility of reports
Data drives strategic decision-making and operational excellence in today’s pharmaceutical market. Business units require strong data culture to have confidence in the direction they are headed to yield commercial success. Our client wanted to make better use of the data central to their operations.
Additionally, they wanted to ensure staff were able to access, interpret, and action findings from reports to get more value from the material they were generating.
Therefore, they approached CSL with the challenge of empowering their Commercial Excellence Team with the skills and capabilities required to enhance their current data culture.

CSL reviewed the existing data culture and implemented recommendations
CSL conducted a review of internal data culture and as a result recognised the need for greater data cohesion, beginning with the development of a comprehensive data dictionary.
We then collaborated with the client to create new dashboards and update existing ones to align with the new data dictionary.
In addition, developing user guides provided further context for the data sources feeding into the dashboards. This information was reproduced for multiple audiences: regular, advanced users, and non-BI colleagues.
Our client found our deliverables flexible, supportive and sustainable
The data dictionary document served as a cornerstone for the client, guiding the team and serving as a reference point they could come back to after any dashboard training. It provided clear and standardised definitions, with explanations for various metrics, data sources, and reporting-related information.
By building new dashboards, we removed the barrier for our client to visualise their data. Multiple slicers on one page allowed them to cut the data how they wanted it, incorporating a high degree of flexibility to future proof the work.
Additionally, CSL helped implement continuous improvement initiatives internal to the client, such as BI feedback processes and user training for wider colleagues. Client feedback was positive, and they found the deliverables we put in place were being used much more frequently than the previous reporting.
